Freeze and thaw affecting water network

THE ‘freeze and thaw’ experienced since Christmas Day could be to blame for some Powys residents being without water, the company has said.

“The snow, the ice and the record low temperatures we’ve had in recent weeks followed by today’s thaw is causing us lots of problems,” said Peter Perry, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water's operations director.

“We have never been busier. The biggest problem by far is burst water pipes and all our teams are out and working flat out to find and fix bursts as quickly as possible.

“We are getting lots of calls from customers who have bursts on their own plumbing. Unfortunately we cannot help with these problems.

“If you have a burst on your own water pipe – that is anything between the stop tap in the street or in the pavement outside your property and your inside taps – please get in touch with a plumber. Sorry, but we can’t help.

“But if you know your own plumbing is fine and your neighbours have no water either, then it is very likely to be a burst on our water mains system.

"In which case, please see the list of current bursts and problems on our website which we are keeping updated throughout the day and night.

“If your problem is not on this list, then give us a call on 0800 0520130.

"Do please bear with us – we are doing all we can to get the water supply system back to normal as quickly as we can.”

A burst water pipe in Llandrindod could have affected up to 2,000 residents, the company confirmed on Tuesday, December 28, due to the 'freeze and thaw' effect.
