WREXHAM residents face a three per cent rise in council tax from April as the council attempts to balance its books.

The rise by Wrexham Council, being proposed as part of a financial overhaul by the authority which has already saved £7.5 million, will push the council tax bill on a typical Band D property from £863 to £889.

Wrexham Council’s executive board will be given details of proposals for the 2011/12 revenue budget next Tuesday, before a vote by the full council on February 28.

Council chiefs have been quick to point out this will be one of the lowest increases in England and Wales.

Total spending plans for the financial year amount to £208 million, which is virtually unchanged from the current year.

Mark Owen, the council’s chief finance and performance officer, said that during consultations with members of the public and trade unions there had not been “any tremendous amount of negative feedback”.

Mr Owen said measures to shield social care for adults and children and also schools’ spending were built into the budget.

He said the proposed council tax increase to pay for the spending plans was three per cent.

This, he pointed out, was the fifth lowest in Wales and the seventh lowest of the 348 local authorities across both Wales and England.

Council leader, Cllr Aled Roberts, said: “This is a tough settlement but we have set
our targets while at the same time protecting schools and social care for children and adults.

“This is a tribute to the 14 months of work that our officers have put into the budget.”

Courtesy of that dynamic duo Gordon Brown and Ed Balls. They should be in the Tower. Did I mention we have speeding traffic in Penyffordd every day? North Wales Police do not care. Nor does Carl Sargeant AM.

    But where are Penyffordd's councillors?

Another example of the people paying for the mess the bankers created and the bankers are still getting richer along with their Tory cronies. Cue the usual rightwing lackeys.

Another example of the people paying for the mess the bankers created and the previous Government presided over. Cue the usual leftwing defensiveness :-)

When the Tory/LibDem coalition followers waste our time when they pour driop spit and venom on everything in an attempt to justify and excuse it's vile thieving from the public pot to enable them to continue to pay it's banker friends and family.

Roland , do try to be a bit more original , not had your instructions from Tory HQ yet on what reply to give? Scrapman , I think you will find capitalism failed as well , thats why we are in a world recession , as for taking ££££ bonuses most people only want what they need not what they can get , not all the public are the children of Thatcher.

With all due respect - it's a percentage which is well below inflation (3.7% CPI, 4.8% RPI) and I think a 3% rise in council tax is actually fairly reasonable in light of budget cuts galore. *braces for the barrage of criticism*

KC ," barrage of criticism" you have put forward your opinion which you are entitled to do in a democratic society, I may be wrong but I thought councils were under instruction not to raise CT above a certain % , anyone throw any light on that?

Jeez, is that all? I expected much higher council tax increase. I understand that its partialy the banks fault we are having to pay more, but thats only because politicians did nothing to stop them. Makes no difference who it was Thatcher, Blair,Brown etc. they are all to blame as well by default. The thing is its going to get worse, next year could see a 5pc increase.

Its not the increase its the lose of services that matter , these loses will affect people ,mainly the old , young and disabled , a 3% increase is a high amount for people already hit by higher fuel costs and VAT rises and we do not have the luxury of bonus payments like the bankers , already we are being warned of no pay rises again this yr , we are all in this together , my ar@e.

And you think they will listen to us? do you really think what we feel goes anyway to politicians making the right decision? they are in it up to there thieving coniving necks just as much as the bankers. if we lose a service here or a service there they dont give gnats bollock as long as they get there cut complete with pensions regarless of whos party they belong to. but as always we have to pay for there mistakes, some with there lives.

Bit defensive, that, Libby. The very simple truth is that Labour were in power for over a decade, at the end of which there was the biggest financial crisis for a generation. Perhaps, if they'd governed rather than giving the financial institutions free reign, then we might not be in this mess.

Mr Cleth , you can keep the Tory party mantra going as long as you like , we are in a world recession caused by the rightwing bankers . You and your ilk can look for scapegoats but history will show the true and point the finger at those responsible.

IMO , your late night posts always seem a little tired and confused , maybe best left to morning /afternoon contributions.

Bankers the Labour party refused to address for 13 years, stop trying to pass the buck, Socialism does not work. if your so bloody perfect may be its you who should be prime minister, youd soon fill your pockets and still bow to the bankers because you have no solution, if so we'd all be pleased to read them.

IMO , I refer you back to my post of 21:13, 11/02/11.
