A GROUP has formed to argue the case for cycling to be allowed on Llandudno's North Shore.
Neil McKenzie, of Llandudno Safe Cycling Group, said he found the lack of safe cycling in Llandudno ‘utterly baffling’ and that cycling routes should be linked between the two coasts.

Roy Spilsbury, vice chair of CTC Cymru, lent his support and said cyclists should be able to commute and exercise responsibly on the ‘vast and largely vacant promenade’.

Mr McKenzie added: “The work done to improve safety for children who cycle to John Bright School is a good start, but we need to move on rapidly towards a proper joined-up network of safe cycling tracks.

“The Llandudno Safe Cycling Group was set up recently and has already been effective in blocking a proposal by the North Promenade Advisory Group to introduce fines for anyone cycling on the north promenade.”

However, Peter Caldwell, MD of Mostyn Estates, who lease the promenade to Conwy Council, said this was misinformed and that there had never been plans for fines to be introduced.

He said that Mostyn Estates had proposed that the seats on the prom be moved forward to make room for a cycling track eight years ago, but this had not been carried forward.

Mr Caldwell added: “Mostyn Estates are not opposed to cycling on the prom, provided there is a safe way for people to cycle there.

“But how are you going to make it safe when the track has to navigate past the bandstand when there are 2-300 people there, the sailing area or the war memorial?

“There is also the problem of joining North and West Shore, there is no safe route through the town.”

Town councillors have also expressed concerns over pedestrians’ safety, but those in favour of cycling say that they are the ones at risk from traffic.

Do you think cyclists should be allowed on the North Shore?
