BREAST care services will remain at Llandudno Hospital but stroke and cardiac care will eventually be relocated.
Assembly Health Minister Edwina Hart announced that breast services are safe and that up to 70 per cent of cardiac care will remain at the hospital in the short term.
She said: “The current breast care service should remain at Llandudno for the foreseeable future whilst further work and advice is provided on a model of breast care services in North Wales.
“I have accepted the recommendations into further service enhancement at the hospital and for cardiac and stroke services to be relocated, in the longer term, elsewhere in North Wales.”
Cllr Linda Groom, Chairman of the Hospital Action Group (HAG), said: “We are ecstatic at the news and will remain vigilant to see that the promised services are implemented.
“In the meantime we have been asked by the Minister to research the need for a 'Walk In Centre' in the town which would be an excellent idea considering the area triples in size during the summer months.”
Last month Mrs Hart announced that the hospital would remain open and that there would be an expansion of surgical day case capacity and a new eight bed acquired brain injury unit.
Mrs Hart said: “Overall, this means that Llandudno will boast an impressive range of services including a new rheumatology service, an extended gastroenterology service, increased day case surgery capacity and enhanced neurological services.”
Darren Millar Conservative AM for Clwyd West said that the removal of stroke and cardiac services from Llandudno Hospital was a “hammer blow”.
He said: “Despite all her warm words of reassurance the minister is simply rubber stamping recommendations in the Designed for North Wales report which caused so much public outrage across the region in the run-up to last year's elections. More than 17,000 people have signed petitions rejecting the removal of these vital services at the hospital.”
Cllr Groom said HAG would like to thank the people of Llandudno, Conwy County who supported the fight to retain vital the services at Llandudno General Hospital.
