SIX local schools will be forced to close their doors on Thursday, when teachers across the country go on strike.
Organised by the National Union of Teachers to fight the Government’s proposed 2.45 per cent pay rise for this year, this will be the first national strike by teachers in 21 years.

It is mainly primary schools which will be feeling the effects of the protest, with most secondary schools staying open. Ysgol Deganwy, Ysgol Glanwydden, Ysgol Maelgwn, Ysgol San Sior, and Ysgol Pen y Bryn will not be open on Thursday due to the shortage of teachers. Ysgol Gogarth, which caters for children with learning difficulties, will also be closed.

Although other schools in the area will remain open during the strike, according to a council spokeswoman a further ten schools will have some classes absent.

Information leaflets have been issued by the NUT explaining in detail why the industrial actions is taking place, with the message "What's good for teachers is good for the children they teach".
