A GROUP of councillors have joined together to give tourists visiting Llandudno a Welsh experience.
Llandudno Town Cllr Gareth Roberts has persuaded fellow members to look at adding 'croeso', welcome in Welsh, to the famous Welcome to Llandudno sign on Penrhyn Hill.

He said: "It is one of the great views in Wales and the sign reminds me how fortunate I am to live here and perhaps more importantly what a great place Llandudno is to visit. But it has always seemed curious to me that the sign was in English only and I think it is high time that we added a 'croeso' to it."

Llandudno Town Council's cross-party Decorative Lighting Committee has approved a feasibility study into the plan with Cllrs Mark Jones, John Boyle and Terry Davies lending their support.

Cllr Roberts said seeing more Welsh in the town would be good for visitors and residents alike with research suggesting tourists visiting Wales want a distinctively Welsh experience.

He said: "We have to make the utmost of the unique culture of Wales and the Welsh language is the most obvious thing that sets us apart from competing resorts like Blackpool and Bournemouth, and, in my view, more of it can only be a good thing for the town and the local economy.

"And let's not forget the large numbers of Welsh-speaking residents who also would also like to see more Welsh on the streets of their town."

Cllr Roberts's plan of introducing a Welsh language policy to help residents has been approved and the council will now look at the possibility of having a permanent Welsh-speaking member of staff.
