Mostyn Estate is hoping demolition work on a long standing Llandudno site will begin as early as March.

The Conwy Council planning committee gave approval to fully demolish the Tudno Castle Hotel last week, awaiting final approval from Cadw.

The planning committee last week said: "The demolition of the whole of the remaining building is justified, given the condition of the building and the unviable cost of repairs to the existing building.

"It has not been possible to deliver the previously proposed facade retention scheme, due to the unstable condition of the facades.

Work started on a £10m scheme to re-develop the site - constructing a 63-bedroom hotel, restaurants, and other businesses - of the Tudno Castle Hotel last year but had to be put on hold when partial demolition work revealed that the Grade II listed façade was unstable.

It meant that landowners Mostyn Estates Ltd and developers Opus North had to go back to the drawing board to come up with revised plans which would allow the demolition of the façade followed by what they describe as “faithful reconstruction” of it.

Mostyn Estates managing director Edward Hiller added: "We are really pleased to have gained consent, which will allow us to take the project forward.

"We want to recommence work as soon as we can, but are awaiting approval from Cadw before that can happen. Once work starts there will be a requirement for short term road closures to allow the demolition work to be carried out, but every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum."
