Contractors moved on site on Monday and began preparing for the dismantling of the Victoria Pier.

Councillors gave their final approval in November to dismantle the Colwyn Bay Pier, to record and store heritage elements for reuse in any potential future redevelopment and to redevelop a ‘truncated pier’.

Conwy County Borough Council Chairman, cllr Brian Cossey, said: “We’re all aware of the deteriorating state of the pier and the collapse last year confirmed the very real risk it poses to the public.

"The work to dismantle the remaining structure will need be carried out in a safe, carefully planned and controlled manner, and members of the public are asked to keep a safe distance from the structure whilst this work takes place.”

The work is expected to take about four months.

Whilst the existing structure is removed, the council’s project team will work on finalising the designs for a truncated pier on the site. Once complete, the necessary approvals will be sought and a tender for the redevelopment work will be issued.

During deliberations, the Council also reiterated its continued support of Colwyn Victoria Pier Trust, as the group develops proposals and funding applications for the future restoration and re-creation of a more substantial, self-sufficient pier.
