Councillors have been left wondering if they are being listened to after cabinet continued with its new four-weekly bin collection plans.

This comes despite two scrutiny committees disagreeing with the decision, and a full council last month asking for a re-think.

The most recent meeting, on February 26, saw councillors once again express their concerns for the four-weekly collections and vote for what they thought was going to be a re-think by cabinet.

However, The Pioneer understands the decision never went to a re-think. Instead last week, when the cabinet met, and discussed the topic of four-weekly collections it was only to vote mitigations be met before launching later this year.

The decision was passed unopposed leading to an uproar from councillors, thinking the cabinet had totally ignored their request for a re-think.

Councillor Ronnie Hughes, Tudno ward, said he was disappointed and was under the impression cabinet were having a re-think about the four-weekly collection last week.

Cllr Hughes said: "We told them to have a re-think about it, but when did cabinet do that? It is really disappointing because it has been to two scrutiny committee meetings and a full council and they have all voted against it.

"When you have two scrutiny committee go against it but it still goes ahead, councillors start to wonder whether the cabinet are listening to them?"

Following its meeting last Tuesday, cabinet said the four-weekly collection would begin in September and would start working with the public in the meantime so everyone was ready for the new scheme.

Over the next few months the Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) said officers and councillors will be looking at coordinating the changes, finding out what additional support people might need, and starting to plan new collection routes ready for the new collection process.

Cabinet member, cllr Donald Milne, said: “It’ll take a few months to make the arrangements for the changes, and once everything has been finalised we’ll circulate the full details and calendars to every household who will have a change to their collection.”

“In the meantime, if you need extra recycling containers, a visit from our recycling officers or you have a question about refuse and recycling contact our Mochdre offices by email erf@conwy.gov.uk or phone 01492 575337.”

Despite this preparation Cllr Hughes said there were still concerns CCBC would be able to help everyone.

He added: "When will they start communicating and how are they going to get around to thousands and thousands of people?"
