Fifteen schools in Conwy county have achieved the top green ranking in the Welsh Government’s colour-coded rating scheme.

The system categorises schools as green, yellow, amber or red – depending on how well they are performing.

Schools that fall into the green category are judged to be performing strongly.

Those in the yellow category receive up to 10 days’ support; amber schools will have up to 15 days and those in the red category up to 25 days.

The latest figures show a significant improvement within Conwy with just 10 schools achieving green ratings last year, while the number of amber ratings have dropped dramatically, falling by seven schools.

Fourteen primary schools in the area achieved green ratings including Ysgol Bro Gwydir, Ysgol Cynfran, Ysgol Deganwy, Ysgol Ffordd Dyffryn, Ysgol Glan Gele, Ysgol Llandrillo yn Rhos, Ysgol Morfa Rhianedd, Ysgol Pant Y Rhedyn, Ysgol Pen Y Bryn, Ysgol Pencae, Ysgol Porth y Felin, Ysgol San Sior, Ysgol T. Head teacher Eithne Hughes said: “The governors are absolutely delighted that we have achieved a green status for a fourth year in succession.

“This is just testament to the staff, pupils and parent body, it takes all those parts to make things work well and keep the standard high.”

Ysgol Swn-y-Don, in Old Colwyn, was one of only two schools, along with Ysgol Emrys Ap Iwan (Abergele), to receive a red rating.

Chair of Governors at Swn y Don said: “The categorisation process has helped identify additional support and resources and as a result the school is making positive progress.”

Councillor Garffild Lewis, Cabinet Member for Education said: “It (school categorisation) enables schools to identify the factors that contribute to progress and achievement, and the areas on which they can focus to achieve further development.

Cllr Lewis added he acknowledged the good work done by those green and yellow ranked schools while he said Conwy’s Education Service and GwE were working closely with the two red ranked schools.
