Colwyn Bay's Porth Eirias has secured the one of the biggest events on the student sporting calendar.

The Colwyn Bay watersports centre has landed the BUCS/Student Windsurfing Association Nationals event taking it from the former Olympic venue in Weymouth.

More than 100 young windsurfers will be flocking to Porth Eirias next weekend (Friday 27 to Sunday 29) to showcase their skills and prowess on the water.

Managing director of Colwyn Bay Watersports, Taffy Osborne, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the nationals this year and the fact that Porth Eirias can hold its own as a competition class venue, makes us all very proud.

“We’ve also become the place that most universities are coming to if they want to turn their windsurfers into instructors or club presidents."

Racing at Porth Eirias will be split into advanced, intermediate, beginner, freestyling and team racing categories allowing student of all levels to take part and enjoy the competition.

Competitors will be competing for BUCS points on the Student Union sport league table which measures sporting success in universities across the country.

Event manager, Kai Davies, added: “We’re looking forward to playing a big part of the nationals which isn’t just a competition but an opportunity for windsurfers to network and socialise over three days.

"Many of the competitors are camping in the Barn at Stadiwm Zip World, partying in the town and the atmosphere is going to be electric. We can’t wait.

“We’d love it if local people come down to watch and if they like what they see we can help introduce them to the sport”.

The Student Windsurfing Association is a not-for-profit organisation set up to promote windsurfing amongst the student community in the UK by supporting clubs at various universities.
