A WOODEN Spitfire sculpture, carved in Kinmel Bay, will be displayed at the forthcoming Armed Forces Day in Llandudno.

The thirds scale Spitfire, sculptued out of a black pine tree, was made by Edward Parkes who stated his objective was to make it to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the RAF and display it at the Armed Forces Day.

Edward said: “The Spitfire is such a graceful aircraft I’ve always wanted to carve one, and I can’t think of a better way I could mark the centenary of the RAF.

"It’s first outing will be at the Armed Forces Day where it will be mounted on a steel frame showing it banking at an angle of 50 degrees.

“Afterwards I’ll put it up for sale but I might display it at other shows if anyone is interested.”

“When the carving is completed the sculpture will be oiled and polished to show off the grain of the timber, which came from a tree in the Conwy Valley that had been blown over.”

Edward explained he used a model of a Spitfire for, and added the wings are detachable from the fuselage for ease of transport.

Last year Edward carved two owls out of a damaged tree at Ysgol Aberconwy.

He uses specialist chain saws for the carving, and said: “I have undertaken commissions all over the UK, in addition to the Ysgol Aberconwy owls I’ve done some for recesses in the town walls of Conwy and I’ve done a goat on the Great Orme.”
