ONE of North Wales' most exciting up and coming festivals is set to double in size next weekend.

Now in its third official year, U Know 2018 Fairestival will present a jam packed line up of more than 90 acts featuring a mix of reggae, world music, jungle, funk, soul, disco and more across three days at the Sportsman’s Arms in the Denbigh Moors.

In just six years, since its humble beginnings as a small gathering in Llangollen, the festival's organisers are anticipating about 1,000 revellers to walk thought the gates this year - doubling last year's total of 500.

George Faire, festival organiser and a tree surgeon from Llangollen, said: "We've had to relocate twice, from Llangollen to my parents' farm in Pentrecelyn near Ruthin and now to the Denbigh Moors to accommodate the people.

"This is the first year I've had to get a team together to handle the scope of the paper work and the size of the festival itself. It's also the first time we're doing the full festival experience and offering more than just music.

"While we do want everyone to come - no matter their age or beliefs - we also want to keep our friendly, open and welcoming atmosphere though, and continue to give young, underground artists from the area the chance to play on the festival circuit."

Set across four stages - including a barn, a geodome in the nearby woods and a Jamaican style trench town - this year's festival headliners include are Manchester reggae artist Kuntri Ranks, Preston Gypsy folk band Mobius Loop, Rhuddlan country rockers The Goat Roper Rodeo Band, Manchester DJ Nuusic and London and North Wales act Racubah Sound System.

There are also circus and acrobatic performances, a fire dancer display and an indoor flea market selling produce, handmade crafts, jewellery and clothing from the area.

The festival is family friendly, and offers a dedicated play area for children run by the Magic Garden Facepainting team from Betws y Coed as well as featuring a ‘Animals & Insects’ theme with a fancy dress day on the Saturday and arts and crafts workshops.

However, despite the increase in size, Mr Faire is keen to keep the impact of the event to a minimum on the environment, and retain the friendly atmosphere of the festival.

The festival’s commitment to eco friendly practices has seen organisers encourage festival goers to recycle and carpool to the event to reduce their carbon footprint.

There is also no glass allowed on site, food vendors are asked to serve food with wooden cutlery and paper plates and there are also no open fires allowed on site, with a single communal barbecue available to campers for cooking.

"We aim to recycle 95 percent of everything people use at the festival. We're all pretty green people so it's something we're really pushing.

"We'll also put up messages here and there about recycling, so hopefully people who come to see great future bands leave with something more.

"The biggest stage of the whole festival is the trench town reggae area that's all be constructed using recycled wood and other reclaimed materials."

UKnow takes place at the Sportsman's arms from Friday, August 17 until Sunday 19. Weekend tickets are £60, and Saturday day tickets are £25, available from Asteria of the Stars on Abergele Road in Colwyn Bay or from wegottickets.com.
