Conwy cabinet members could be in line for a pay rise of more than £3000 each.

This would see Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) cabinet members receive £29,300 a year, rather than their currently salary of £26,200.

Chairs of committees could also be in line for a pay rise of more than £2000 which would result in a total increase in pays of more than £30,000 the equivalent of about 30 to 40 house hold tax payments.

The Democratic Services Committee had a lengthy discussion on the item on Monday and have left the decision in the hand of the individuals as to whether or not they take the pay increase.

A democratic services committee spokesperson said: "The Head of the democratic services emphasised that these aren’t proposals by the Independent Remuneration Panel – they are determinations.

"The Council has to accept the determinations but it is up to individual councillors whether they accept the full salary.

"The Committee discussed the reason why the increase in senior salary looks so significant and it was reported that it was because Conwy County Borough Council was the only local authority in Wales that previously paid all our senior salary holders at the lower level."

Councillor Mike Priestly, chair of the CCBC audit committee, said he would not be taking a pay rise and it would be morally wrong for any of his fellow councillors to take up the raise.

Cllr Priestly added: "Now is not the time for councillors to take a pay rise. As chair of the audit committee I will not be accepting this pay rise, it is morally wrong especially after the hike in the tax, by five per cent, and the monthly bin collections."
