GUNS, guns, and even more guns are the order of service in the no-holds-barred assassin movie Wanted.

Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is a milquetoast office drone with a soul-destroying job, a cheating girlfriend and is privy to constant panic attacks.

But his world is thrown into turmoil when he is told some shocking revelations by a mysterious, tattooed woman called Fox (Angeline Jolie).
Wesley is infact the son of one of the greatest assassins the world has ever known, who was a member of a secret society called The Fraternity - a group of killers endowed with enhanced human powers who kill to preserve the balance of order and chaos.

But now his estranged father's killer, Cross, is after him, and the only way to stop him is to take his father's place in the group.

Wanted is Timur Bekambetov's first American film after throwing Russian cinema into the mainstream with the effects laden Nightwatch series.
Based on Mark Millar's welcomed graphic novel, the same impossible stunts and jaw dropping scenarios are transposed from Bekambetov's previous work into this adrenaline fuelled, action-fest.

From the outset, Wanted hurtles the audience through 110 minutes of non-stop combat including heart-pounding car chases and a wealth of bullet-bending gun fights (often at the same time).

James McAvoy cements his place as one of the UK's most accomplished actors by not only nailing a believable American accent, but by looking equally at home tearing through a factory unloading more bullets than a Steven Seagal movie marathon as he does when portraying stiff-upper-lipped Brits in period films.

Angelina Jolie also impresses as the slinky Fox, taking a break from UN duties and child adoptions to remind people that she can do a fun film too, while Morgan Freeman adds his usual seal of quality.

Wanted may follow a well used premise (including the often parodied montage of improvement), but it is certainly a much needed injection of mindless fun into a genre which has been over run with a need to be super-serious.

Shying away from any sense of realism, it actively embraces the ludicrous and unbelievable to make a genuinely enjoyable flick that lends itself perfectly to Friday night, end-of-the-week escapism.

7.5/10 - Mind blowing mayhem.
