Rydal swimmers' glittering weekend

SWIMMERS from Rydal Penrhos made a splash at the Urdd Swimming Gala in Cardiff over the weekend, picking up a glittering haul of nine medals.

Topping the bill was 16 year old champion Roy Sterling, who won gold in the individual breaststroke and bronze in the backstroke.

Roy was also part of a hugely successful senior relay team, along with Tom Harding, 15 and Henry Salisbury, 16, both from Colwyn Bay, and Russian team-mate Pavel Nevmovenko, 17, who took gold in a thrilling freestyle relay and silver in the medley relay.

The year nine and ten boys freestyle relay team of Dylan Coombes, Max Copeland, Adam Zeitoun and Will Murphy secured second place in the freestyle relay and fourth in the medley relay.

Rydal’s junior pool stars also got in on the action, with the Year 3 and 4 boys relay team, featuring Finlay Hare, Finan Close, Teddy Roberts and George Smith-Edwards, taking gold in the freestyle event and silver in the medley.

The Year 5 and 6 freestyle squad of Matthew Harrison, Thomas Bale, Adam Lee-Browne and William Sissons also finished first, whilst individual prizes went to Teddy Roberts, who achieved a silver medal in the individual butterfly and Finan Close who won a bronze medal in the individual breaststroke.

Finlay Hare came fourth in both the freestyle and backstroke individual races, Lily Leong finished in seventh in the individual backstroke, year 3 and 4 girls Isabella Rutherford, Niamh Chamberlain, Lily Leong and Cerys Cuddihy placed fifth in the medley relay, whilst Molly Noad and Matthew Harrison reached the finals of the individual breaststroke and freestyle respectively.
