A PAIR of young golf stars have made it through to the national finals of a prestigious competition. Reuben Bather and Charley Simpson, Year 9 and 7 pupils at Rydal Penrhos, produced a series of sensational rounds to qualify for the ISGA Junior League National Championships, which will be held at Radley College on Wednesday, June 21. The duo, who both joined the school’s Golf Academy in September, competed against other pairings from across the North West at four different venues to achieve the accolade, which is the first time a team from the school has reached this stage of the competition. This is the latest in a long line of successes for the twosome, with 13-year-old Reuben earning a Welsh squad selection for the Quadrangular Test at Prestatyn Golf Club in April. Young prodigy Charley has also enjoyed a fine start to life with the Academy and has picked up a number of notable success, and he is now within touching distance of a single-figure handicap after taking the Frank Stockton Memorial Shield at North Wales Golf Club with an outstanding stableford score of 41. Allen Boyd, director of sport at Rydal Penrhos, said: “For Reuben and Charley to make it through to the national finals is something that has never before been achieved by Rydal Penrhos, and it just shows just how far our Golf Academy has come in such a short space of time. “This is down to the hard work of our staff and in particular Golf co-ordinator Ian Richardson, who has given up a great deal of his time to ensure that our young golf stars are fully prepared for each challenge that comes their way, something that is bringing with it great results.”
