A TEENAGE golf sensation will be aiming for further accolades with the national team after earning a call-up for a prestigious competition.

Reuben Bather, a Year 10 pupil at Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay, has been selected to the Welsh U18 squad for the upcoming European Boys Team Championship, which will take place at Kaskada Golf Club in the Czech Republic from July 10-14.

This feat is made even more remarkable given that the sports scholar is just 14, and is a testament to his sensational recent run of regional, national and international successes during what has been an outstanding season to date.

The squad will take part in two official practice days on Saturday, July 7 and Sunday 8 to ready themselves for the competition, which begins with the first and second stroke-play qualification rounds during the opening two days of action.

This will be followed by three days of intense match play encounters between the countries taking part, which will go a long way to determining the overall winner of the continental showcase.

Reuben will be looking to contribute significantly to any success the Welsh team has throughout the week, with the one-handicapper part of the national side that achieved a historic victory at the Quadrangular International Championship in Holland earlier this year.

The junior captain at Maesdu Golf Club in Llandudno has progressed considerably thanks to his efforts with Rydal Penrhos’ thriving golf academy, while he has also added yards to his game thanks to the school’s strength and conditioning programme.

Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “This is another milestone that Reuben can be enormously proud, and to be selected for a national U18 squad aged just 14 is an absolutely astonishing achievement.”
