A CENTURY from Adam Campion helped Colwyn Bay secure a home draw with New Brighton.

The Liverpool and District Cricket League Premier Division side fell just three wickets short of securing a victory when played came to a halt, and the result leaves Sion Morris’ side in ninth spot ahead of their trip to table-topping Northern on Saturday.

The home side made an indifferent start to their time with the bat as Zac Gidlow was trapped lbw by Gabe Johnson-Aley for 17, and he was followed back to the pavilion shortly after by George Johansen after he was caught off an Ashraf Nawab strike on seven.

Morris provided some resistance but was ousted by Ashley Watkins following a promising 33, and there was further cause for optimism thanks to the fantastic efforts of overseas star Dimeth Hewathanthree and Campion, who hit 50 and 107 respectively during a critical stage of the innings.

A 25 not out knock from Will Higginson also provided a valuable contribution as the hosts declared on 269-5 from 49 overs at the crease.

Things got off to a flyer for the Bay in the field when Ryan Holtby clean bowled opener Mark Rowland for a duck, with Jamie Moorhouse sending the stumps of skipper Andrew Clarke flying after he made just ten.

Shaun Davies also got in on the act with the prized wicket of David White for 36, with veteran spinner Paul Jenkins helping himself to the scalps of Tom Horrocks (18), Armand Rabot (4), and Mark Hale (0) on his way to figures of 3-32.

Holtby also claimed another victim in the form of Watkins (28), but Bay were unable to claim the necessary wickets needed and ended the game with eight points after play was stopped with the visitors on 128-7.

There was better fortune for Bay’s second unit, who triumphed by five wickets at Birkenhead Park, with Michael Jennings finishing with figures of 4-27.
