STRUGGLING Conwy finally kickstarted their North Wales Cricket League Division One campaign with a stunning six-wicket victory at title hopefuls Bersham.

The visitors restricted their opponents to 102 all out from 31 overs at the creaser thanks to a massive improvement in the field, with Vaughan Williams leading the way with the wickets of Phillip Young (20), Aled Davies (0) and Amith Thilakarathne (0) to end a blistering six-over spell with figures of 3-7.

He was aided at the other end by David Owen, who put the new ball to good use by taking the scalps of skipper Suresh Koswaththage (18), Rishan Fernando (8) and Loshan Amarasinghe (5) to finish on 3-29, with Graham Meredith and Stan Senior taking a pair of wickets apiece at the combined expense of 65 runs.

Despite losing Meredith (17), Gavin Mart (1), Robert Gater (10) and Evan Williams (12) early on,l an unbeaten 31 from captain Jonathan Williams and 19 not out from David Wilkinson got the away side over the line for the loss of four wickets with one over to spare.

They remain at the second tier basement but will be hugely buoyed by their notable success as Williams’ side prepare to host Mold on Saturday.
