COLWYN Bay were unable to cause a stir at the Liverpool and District Cricket League Premier Division summit as they suffered a narrow 26-run home defeat to leaders Ormskirk.

Sion Morris’ side fell agonisingly short of causing a major upset after a very encouraging display in the field, and the Bay are now third from bottom in the standings ahead of their trip to Wallasey on Saturday.

Veteran spinner Paul Jenkins made an impact early on when he took out the dangerous duo of Andrew Baybutt and Alex Rankin for 29 and 18, and the evergreen former skipper also took out Luke Platt (0), Ian Robinson (0) and Nicky Caunce (4) to end his 16-over spell with impressive figures of 5-52.

He was aided at the other end by Ryan Holtby, who disposed of opener and top scorer John Armstrong for 46 on his way to 2-56, and Adam Campion collected three wickets for the loss of 11 runs from just two overs as the away side were all out for 153.

Things did not begin well for the home side in the middle as Zack Gidlow and Gareth Goodson were sent back to the pavilion by Scott Lees after making 16 and 10 respectively, with Tom Hartley disposing of George Johansen (1), Tom Roberts (4) and Dineth Hewathanthree (9) to give them a steeper mountain to climb early on.

Campion and Will Higginson did not fare much better and were despatched by Alex Mason after making 11 apiece, and despite an impressive 41 from Morris it was not enough to get them over the line as the hosts mustered 127 all out in reply.

There was better fortune for Bay’s second unit, who emerged from their clash at Rainhill with a convincing ten-wicket triumph.
