LLANDUDNO have appointed midfield talisman Danny Hughes as their new captain ahead of their JD Welsh Premier League opener.

The Tudno talisman is widely regarded as one of the best performers operating in the top flight, and he will lead Iwan Williams’ new-look squad in their first top flight outing at Aberystwyth Town tonight (7.45pm).

Hughes made an instant impression after joining the club, leading them to the Huws Gray Alliance title and promotion to the WPL during a standout second tier campaign.

This was followed by an extraordinary third place finish in their debut season, resulting in Europa League qualification and a clash against Swedish giants IFK Goteborg, where he managed to get on the scoresheet.

In a summer of upheaval at the Giant Hospitality Stadium, Hughes and Toby Jones have remained at the forefront of the manager’s plans ahead of his first full season at the helm.

Williams, said: "Danny will captain us this year and lead us into the season on the back of a fantastic pre-season.

“He’s fitter, stronger and quicker than ever and has performed really well throughout. He’s taken to the role fantastically and with him being a local boy, I know how much this means to him.

“We’re hoping that this added responsibility takes him up another level which on the back of his pre-season campaign I’m sure it will.

“It is important to note though that we have a number of leaders within this squad with the likes of Kai Edwards, Mike Pearson, Shaun Pearson, Mark Connolly, Steve Thomas, Ieuan Hewitt, the list is endless, and we’re very lucky to have these types of characters, but after all the years’ service and the passion Danny has for this club, he fully deserves the armband."
