AN ASPIRING young skier is looking for sponsorship as he looks to continue what has been a glittering young career to date.

Xavier Poynton, a Year 2 pupil at Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay, is part of the prestigious Ambition Racing development squad and was the youngest child selected to the nationwide initiative.

He continued his exceptional run of recent form with two bronze medals in the final round of the GBR Indoor Series, where he defied his age once again to achieve success in the U10 boys’ category.

The seven-year-old is now having to travel to Manchester on a weekly basis after losing his home slope at Capel Curig due to structural damage, where he is being trained by the father of World Cup alpine ski racer Dave Ryding and the Ambition Racing team.

Xavier has secured one sponsorship deal with West End Dental Group during the initial stage of his sponsorship search as he looks to further enhance his reputation as one of the brightest young skiers in the United Kingdom in the coming months.

Mother Clare Poynton-Craig, said: “This year really was just about getting Xav used to the bigger stage and increased competition with a view to being a real contender in the division next year, so to see him developing and getting his feet on the podium this year is awesome.

“The racers that Xavier is racing against now are the best from all over the UK, many of them spending time training abroad, so what he’s doing is remarkable really.

“There is no way Xavier would be able to compete at this level without the support of sponsors, it would be a tragedy if a child with such passion, talent and brilliant attitude had to give up his sport, so we’d hope he could secure a couple more sponsors to help him get to the Welsh, English and British Championships in the Alps.”
