COLWYN Bay ended another turbulent week with a sensational 2-0 triumph at Evo-stik League West Division rivals Clitheroe.

Newly appointed manager Craig Hogg saw his side turn in a resolute display to get their new boss off the mark at the first opportunity, and the Seagulls will look to build on this positive momentum when they host Widnes on Saturday (3pm).

Hogg and assistant Neil Coverley, said: “Some of the football we played wasn't the best, but the lads have worked their socks off to keep a clean sheet and taken their chances with quality finishes so it was really, really pleasing.

“There were some big performances, especially from Callum (Hassan) who worked really hard as a lone striker and the three central midfielders (Luke Horrocks, Danny Andrews and Lassana Mendes) whose work rate was exceptional."

The visitors spurned a couple of chances early on when Lassana Mendes headed a Tom McCready free-kick into the hands of Cameron Terry, and the stopper had to be at his best to deny Callum Hassan soon after.

Bay keeper Paddy Wharton continued his exceptional start to the season with a number of fine saves throughout, keeping out Zehn Mohammed’s effort from point blank range before denying former Seagulls’ star Obi Anoruo when the striker was put through on goal.

After the break saw the away side come out with a renewed sense of purpose and they were rewarded on 48 minutes when James Barrigan fired a superb strike past Terry after some fine individual work from Craig Pritchard.

They had to defend resolutely in the face of some stern pressure following the goal, but they held firm and sealed the victory in stoppage tie when substitute Ethan Devine delivered a curled effort into the corner to move Bay within three points of the top five.

Hogg also revealed that negotiations were continuing with Tranmere Rovers to try and extend Wharton's loan period, but added: "At the end of the day he is Tranmere's player and if they decide they want him back then he will have to go back."
