CONWY Borough continued their excellent start to life back in the Huws Gray Alliance with a 2-0 home triumph over title hopefuls Rhyl.

The visitors began the game on the front foot and they almost went ahead on 11 minutes when an Aaron Pomeyie’s shot was well saved by Keighan Jones.

Gareth Thomas’ men started to impose themselves on the contest soon after and they were rewarded on 19 minutes when Adam Whitlock took advantage of a defensive lapse to fire the Tangerines in front.

Things almost got better for the home side on the half hour mark when Corrig McGonigle was presented with a chance, but the prolific striker hit the post with a fierce strike that had Lilies’ stopper Rory Crowther beaten.

The away side finished the half on the front foot with a prolonged spell of possession, but Barry Torrence and defender Danny Sullivan failed to find the target to ensure they went into the break behind.

After the break saw the hosts come out with a renewed sense of purpose and they doubled their advantage on 46 minutes when Dean Seager made the most of another mix-up in the visiting rearguard to loft a header over Crowther and into the net.

Crowther was forced into action once again soon after when he diverted an effort on 56 minutes, with Pomeyie narrowly missing out on reducing the arrears at the other end when his shot was well blocked.

The introduction of Kristian Pierce and Gareth Partridge brought fresh life into the Lilies’ engine room, and they were unfortunate not to pull one back when his header fell narrowly wide with 67 gone.

Aaron Hassall was not to test Jones when the keeper spilled his initial effort, but Torrence was unable to get to the loose ball and the danger was averted, and James Murphy’s ambitious 45-yard effort caught out the Boro stopper bit missed the target after 81 minutes.

Their misery continued late on when Pierce drilled an effort wide after latching on to a Torrence header on 87 minutes.
