LLANRUG United bowed out of the JD Welsh Cup at the second qualifying phase after a 3-1 reverse at Llandudno Albion.

Darren Jones’ men started the game on the front foot and opened the scoring on 12 minutes when midfielder Luke Fountain took advantage of a mistake from Terry Jones to slot home.

The away side responded well to the setback and levelled matters after 23 minutes courtesy of a sensational strike from skipper Eifion Williams, who caught out keeper Leon Jones with a stunning 40-yard drive.

This joy proved to be short-lived as the hosts regained their advantage on 26 minutes when Danial Evans pounced at the far post to put Albion back ahead after a prolonged spell of possession.

After the interval saw the visitors create a number of opportunities to level proceedings, but they found Jones in superb form and the home side booked their place in the hat after 75 minutes when the prolific Dave Maddock latched on to a long ball before beating two men and finding the corner.

There was better fortune for Holyhead Town, who has a late effort from recent signing Gari Jo Owen to thank for a 4-3 home win over Llanberis, and Nantlle Vale also progressed to the first round thanks to a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Mynydd Llandegai.

Penrhyndeudraeth also exited the cup after a disappointing 4-1 home reverse at the hands of Coedpoeth United, and Barmouth and Dyffryn United were dumped out following a 3-1 defeat at a resurgent St Asaph City.
