A MOTORCYCLIST defied the odds to make an immediate mark in this year’s Isle of Man TT.

David Jones, of Colwyn Bay, was in tremendous form in the world famous two wheeled event to establish himself as one of the leading newcomers despite facing many limitations compared to other bikers.

Although the 21-year old was the youngest competitor this year and was part of his own team that had no previous experience of the TT course or road racing, David demonstrated his ever-growing motorbike talents by being the fourth quickest newcomer and receiving praise from fellow racers in the 600cc categories.

He was awarded the Joe Craig Trophy for the best performance on a British bike and received two finishing medals after showing composure in both his races.

David, a former pupil at Rydal Penrhos and Rhyl High School, said: “The Isle of Man is a completely different sort of racetrack to what I’ve ever raced at. You have to focus throughout the 37 miles each lap and the roads are a different surface to what I’m used to.

"There was a great mental strain due to the required level of concentration in racing for between one and a half and two hours.

“Although I was officially the fourth fastest newcomer, I believe the circumstances I had to face mean I effectively did as well as anyone.”

David, who works with his family at Clwyd Heating, Rhyl, was the only rider of a Triumph 600 in the event and raced with Michelin tyres, which had never been used before with the bike and suspension.

He added: “Everybody else seems to be using Japanese bikes but we’ve proved what can be done with what we used. I am delighted with how things went and am already planning to do exactly the same thing next year.

“My small team is like a family and I would like to thank everyone who helped me in any way.”

Hailing from an enthusiastic family of motorcyclists, with his father John - now his mechanic - and brother Matthew having also raced in the sport, David began competing at 16 and has since become established on the British Supersport Championship circuit as the possibility grows of him turning professional.

But he is currently enjoying continuing to race for Team David Jones #89 and is looking to attract new sponsorship. For details contact David on 07812971126 or John on 07812971112.
