Colwyn Bay 137 all out
Highfield 138-9
Highfield won by one wicket
COLWYN BAY’S title aspirations were dealt a blow at the weekend by rivals Highfield, who just edged a thrilling game of cricket.
Highfield put the Bay into bowl first, and immediately put them under pressure, dismissing the opening pair Zac Gidlow and Carwyn Williams for just three runs.
Sion Morris however steadied the ship, bagging a half century before being caught at the boundary to pump up the scoreline.
He worked in tandem with Will Hantam (17) and Dafydd Rhys (15) to get Colwyn Bay past the 100 run marker, but his dismissal signalled the end of his side’s progress, with the remaining 37 runs ground out in poor conditions.
While the black clouds over Penrhyn Avenue cast a shadow over the Bay’s innings, it also helped make inroads into the Highfield batting order, as Will Hantam and Ryan Holtby combined for some good early work.
Holtby took the first wicket with the score on 37, catching James Taylor LBW, before Hantam took three in succession, including the league’s top scorer Michael Farrell for just 12, to make it a competitive 58 for four.
But Highfield regrouped and rallied, edging towards their target until Phil Jenkins found his stride, removing the dangerous Mike O’Gaskell for 36 and two more batsmen with Highfield on 103.
The match reached its climax with both sides needing just one more score to claim victory, but it was Highfield who edged the contest, claiming victory with one wicket remaining in the final over.
The Bay next face league leaders Lytham, who lost at the weekend to keep the title race wide open.
