Lytham 197-9
Colwyn Bay 162-6
Match drawn
A WET weekend put a dampener on what could have been a famous victory for Colwyn Bay in their hunt for the Liverpool Competition title.
Half centuries from Will Hantam and Ed Parry edged the Bay towards victory, but a rain-curtailed innings prematurely ended hopes of a vital win, particularly with Gareth Cross and Sion Morris both missing.
Captain Graeme Jones put the home side in to bat first, but the Bay bowlers struggled to make the best of the contitions, with Fayaz Ughradar scoring highly as his side reached 97 before the first wicket.
When the bowlers finally found their stride, Paul Jenkins led the charge, taking five wickets for 77 as the wickets began to fall regularly, leading to Lytham finishing on 197 for nine.
Facing one of the top bowling sides in the league, Hantam’s impressive 62 put the Bay in with a good chance of success, and with Parry adding 55 the match was in the balance when the rain finally won through, ending the match just as Colwyn Bay looked like they could kick on.
The match saw Colwyn Bay leave with seven points, and with no match next week, similar weather conditions will be more than welcome to help out their cause.
Highfield II 201-6
Colwyn Bay II 109 all out
Highfield won by 92
COLWYN Bay seconds couldn’t continue their fine recent form, going down by 109 runs to Highfield seconds.
The Bay put their visitors in to bat first, but hadn’t reckoned with a top order looking to put bat to ball no matter what, with Stephen Arkinson and Nicholas Simms smashing 65 each to guide their side to declare on 201 for six from 50 overs.
Five late wickets gave hope to the Bay line-up, with Arthur Jones taking three and James Jones two as some welcome sunshine offered hope that they could turn the match around after their tough start.
It was a major disappointment, then, that the batsmen failed to follow their opponent’s example, slumping to 92 all out with Tom Roberts top scoring with 30.
The result saw Colwyn Bay take away three points ahead of this weekend’s match away to Wavertree.
