COLWYN Bay were unable to secure back-to-back Liverpool and District Cricket League Premier Division wins as they fell to a seven-wicket home reverse to Lytham.

The Penrhyn Avenue side were unable to recover from a poor batting display that saw them fail to record triple figures, and Sion Morris’ men will be hoping for better fortune on Thursday when welcome Birkenhead Park in the Natwest T20 competition, before hosting Highfield on Saturday.

The home side got off to a poor start when Jack Saunders removed opener Zak Gidlow on three, while Ben Saunders disposed of Pat Leach (6) and overseas player Dimeth Hewathanthree after a contribution of 11.

George Johansen made a promising 29 before he was caught off a Joshua Holden delivery, with Adam Campion becoming Ben Saunders’ latest victim with an 11 knock.

The same bowler also took the wickets of Shaun Davies (1) and Huw Roberts (3) on his way to figures of 5-38, and Holden sent Morris (0) and Will Higginson (15) pack to the pavilion to end an eight over spell on 3-8.

This ensured Bay were restricted to 96 all out from 37 overs at the crease, but their run defence got off to the best possible start when visiting opener Thomas Hessey was trapped lbw by Ryan Holtby for a duck.

Veteran spinner Paul Jenkins also kept things interesting by despatching the dangerous duo of Matty Cartmell and Matt Shawcross for 14 and 13, but an unbeaten 55 from the talented Taylor Cornall ensured the away side reached their target with minimal fuss for the loss of three wickets after just 22 overs of play.

There was better fortune for Bay’s second unit, who came away from their clash at Rainhill with a 27-run victory.

A superb innings of 75 from Chris Barry was the highlight of their 168 all out, and this was followed by a sensational spell of bowling from Michael Jennings to make the difference on the day.

The gifted bowler was in ruthless form and helped himself to seven wickets for the loss of 49 runs as the home side made 141 all out in reply.
