LLANDUDNO retained their JD Welsh Premier League status with a narrow 1-0 victory over Aberystwyth Town.

Iwan Williams’ side dedicated their triumph to club stalwart Tony Healy who died last week, with his family attending the game which saw them safe with three games to spare.

They are next in action on April 14 when Tudno make the trip to Carmarthen Town, who boosted their chances of safety with a win at Newtown.

A cagey opening brought little in the way of goalmouth action, with new signing David Thompson coming closest on 11 minutes when his 30-yard effort was saved.

Toby Jones brought the best out of Aber stopper Ryan Mullock on 33 minutes with a fierce drive, and at the other end John Owen forced a smart save from Alex Lynch after the interval on 53.

Lively winger Thompson made a huge impression on his debut ad went close to netting on his debut once again on 55 minutes with a strike that flew narrowly over during a period of pressure.

The introduction of Marc and Matty Williams brought freshness to the Tudno forward line, and it was the player-assistant manager that popped up with the crucial goal on 77 minutes after Owen had missed a chance from close range for the visitors.

This proved to be the turning points of the contest, with the home side’s rearguard holding firm in the closing stages for an elusive clean sheet and three points that secured their top-flight status.

Williams will now begin preparing his side for next season in what is expected to be a busy summer at the Giant Hospitality Stadium, and with the pressure now off they can look to finish on a high starting with their visit to the Old Gold, before ending the campaign against Barry Town United and relegated Prestatyn Town.
