Uncapped Warwickshire fast bowler Olly Stone has been named in England’s 16-man squad for their one-day international series in Sri Lanka next month.

The 24-year-old has been drafted in as a replacement for Liam Plunkett, who will miss three of the first five ODIs because of his wedding.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at five things you may not know about the paceman.

Making an early impression

The Norwich-born Stone drew attention early on in his career when taking match figures of 11 for 79 for England Under-19s against their South African counterparts in 2013. His efforts in Paarl were the best figures in a Youth Test but they were in vain as a side also containing future England batsman Ben Duckett succumbed to a defeat which ensured the two-match series finished all-square.

β€œI never hold back”

So says Stone on his Warwickshire profile and that has certainly rung true this season. Stone quickly developed a reputation as one of the fastest bowlers on the county circuit, but he has channelled that aggression into some devastating performances with Warwickshire this year. Into his sixth County Championship match this year, he has registered 36 wickets at a stunning average of 12.41.

Celebration injury

His form this season is even more remarkable when it is taken into account he suffered a horrendous injury to his right knee, suffered while celebrating the wicket of Moeen Ali in a domestic Twenty20 fixture, in June 2016. Stone told the Guardian earlier this year: β€œI had to learn to walk again without limping.” He snapped his anterior cruciate ligament and suffered some cartilage damage.

Blast-off

Stone’s 2017 campaign was largely a write-off as he recovered from his knee issue but he was one of the standout performers at Finals Day in the T20 Blast last year, clocking speeds upwards of 90mph and showing that none of his pace had diminished despite his injury woes. He would miss the conclusion of the campaign due to a bruised heel but the seeds of his successful 2018 were planted last September.

Olly Stone and the Cursed Child

The bowler has a good friend in Sam Clemmett, a Norfolk-born actor best known for his stage role as Albus Potter in the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Clemmett has a little over 30,000 followers on Twitter, dwarfing Stone’s own number which was sitting just shy of 2,700 on Wednesday. Perhaps his numbers will rise after his England call-up.
