A PAIR of talented sailors from the region performed well at an international event recently.

Ewan Luke and Zac Blomeley, Lower Sixth Form pupils at Rydal Penrhos School, travelled to Barcelona as part of the United Kingdom 29er Youth Squad to compete at the Eurocup Series event.

Prior to the competition, the duo took part in a UKYS training programme in Weymouth before having two days of further coaching from the school’s Head of Sailing Max Todd in Spain.

This preparation led to some impressive finishes despite light winds benefitting the lighter pairings, with Ewan and Zac claiming top-ten placings during the event as a result of their fine performance.

Unfortunately having to leave the event prior to its conclusion due to an early flight to ensure they were back in school Monday morning hampered their overall final positioning.

Allen Boyd, director of sport at Rydal Penrhos, said: “This was another very strong performance from Ewan and Zac at an event which featured some of the most promising young sailors from across the continent.

“To achieve three top twelve finishes shows that they are thoroughly deserving of their place among Europe’s elite, and the sky is the limit in terms of what they can achieve in the future.”

“Working with our Head of Sailing Max has aided their development considerably, and he is pushing their skills to levels they have not been to before thanks to his excellent leadership.”
