A HOST of North Wales fighters took centre stage at a weekend event in Llandudno.

The Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts show took place at Venue Cymru on Saturday, March 3, and it was promoted by Mike Egan of the Immortals Gym in Rhos-on-Sea.

Topping the 27-fight bill was the highly anticipated showdown between Bangor boxer Jamie Edwards and Rhyl slugger Mark Sweetman for the British Boxing Union’s Welsh welterweight championship.

The fight proved to be the standout on the evening with plenty at stake going into the final round, with Edwards delivering a telling uppercut to Sweetman in the fifth that sent the challenger to the canvas.

To his credit, Sweetman rose to his feet and managed to see out the remainder of the fight, but a 10-8 round proved to be too much to come back from and Edwards retained his strap via decision after a hugely competitive bout.

Among the other highlights was Egan, who hails from Llandudno and produced a fantastic effort to triumph over Manchester’s Paul Smith, while Thomas Zilka claimed the WRSA North West area title with a second round TKO triumph over Ruthin’s Johan Dyer.

Arwell Morris secured the WRSA Welsh crown after opponent Aaron Whittley was forced to pull out ahead of the extension round after suffering a broken foot, and the tightest decision of the night saw Llandudno fighter Erik Zilka overcome Bangor’s Sam Jones by the slimmest of margins.

Denbigh Boxing Club star Jordan Williams picked up a creditable draw with the experienced Seth Jones, and there were also victories for Stuart Hughes and Andy Jones on the card.
