A COLWYN Bay golf prodigy helped a national side to claim an international tournament victory recently.

Reuben Bather, a Year 10 pupil at Rydal Penrhos School, was part of the Welsh U16 side that travelled to Holland for the annual Quadrangular tournament, which took place from April 10-12.

The 14-year-old began the competition in extremely good form, securing an opening day double against Ireland in both doubles and singles.

This was followed by another excellent effort against a very strong performance against the host nation, where Reuben and his partner won their doubles and he also managed to half his singles round against a very talented Dutch golfer.

His only loss of the championship cam in his doubles match against Scotland, but he bounced back exceptionally well to round off the event with a single triumph.

Reuben’s contribution played a huge part in Wales being crowned overall winners of the competition, which is the first time in their history that they have managed to emerge victorious.

This is the latest in a long line of successes for the one-handicapper, who is currently the junior captain at Maesdu Golf Club in Llandudno and recently won his age category at the ISGA Northern Open in addition to a third placed finish overall in a field consisting of college and university golfers.

Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “This is an absolutely staggering achievement and one that Reuben and the Welsh squad can be enormously proud of.

“To win an international tournament is a significant honour and Reuben can now take this experience into the summer, where he is sure to go on to achieve even more success at both regional and national level.”
