A YOUNG skiing sensation got the chance to train under some of the best coaches in the country during the latest stage of a prestigious programme.

Xavier Poynton, a Year 2 pupil at Rydal Penrhos, was selected as one of a special group of athletes chosen to trial for the Ambition Race Team, one GBR's most prestigious Ski race academies based in Leogang, Austria.

The seven-year-old proved age is no barrier by full immersing himself with the squad during the six-day camp, which saw him enhance his experience off-piste and on course in both slalom and GS.

Mother Clare Poynton-Craig, said: “We were slightly anxious as he is so young and would be training with some exceptional athletes. However, we need not have worried, as Xav got his head down and made us proud. “He’s incredibly lucky to have such amazing coaches in his home club, and now to have access to the training offered at such a prestigious facility is really unbelievable, especially for a child of his age. “We are so proud of how hard he’s worked and his passion and dedication to his sport.”

Xavier’s impressive contribution throughout the week was recognised by programme director Marc Telling, who has invited the pupil to join the 2018-19 squad and has tipped him for a bright future.

“Xav was the youngest athlete to be selected for the week and he did not disappoint, often leading the way with his no fear and no nonsense approach,” he added.

“Xav's skiing came on in leaps and bounds and he has now been selected to re-join the team during the 2018-19 season, where he will become their youngest ever addition.

“Professor-Xav as he is now known amongst his ski racing pals, seems to have the world at his feet and a bright future in front of him as a Ski Racer.”
