A TALENTED Boys’ Hockey side is celebrating a significant three-peat after further success on the national stage.

Rydal Penrhos School’s U16 side travelled to Newtown for the Welsh Schools’ Championships on Thursday, April 26, and both performed to an exceptionally high level to emerge victorious from their respective contests.

After a hugely competitive clash, the group produced a stunning fightback to secure a thrilling 4-3 triumph over the opponents, which was the third year in succession that Rydal Penrhos has won the national title at this level.

A cagey first period brought little in the way of goalmouth action, but Stanwell made a strong start after the interval and managed to gain a two-goal cushion thanks to a pair of quick-fire efforts.

This provoked a strong response from the Rydal Penrhos side, who reduced the arrears soon after when Kevin Farrell converted an opportunity following good work from skipper Jacob Heaton-Rue, and things got even better for them soon after when Finlay Hare levelled matters with a superb finish.

Now fully in the ascendancy, Heaton-Rue put them ahead for the first time when his thunderous effort gave the opposing keeper no chance, and they doubled their advantage after another neat passage of play resulted in Matt Fiorita finding the net.

A late rally from Stanwell brought with it a third goal and ensured a nervy end to proceedings, but Phil Mather’s side remained resolute to emerge victorious and scoop the national crown.

Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “This was a fantastic display of character from our U16 side, who demonstrated their battling qualities and their superb talent to win the national championship for the third consecutive year.

“Full credit goes to each member of the squad for their exceptional contribution, and to Mr Mather and Mr Rippon for their tireless commitment to preparing the squad in the best possible way to continue our rich history of success in the competition.”
