JUNIOR rugby stars from the region will be showcasing their skills at a special competition this weekend.

Rydal Penrhos’ U8, U9, U10 and U11 sides will all be competing against nearby rivals Colwyn Bay in the annual Cooper Cup, and the idea of the event first originated some years ago from members of the Junior Section who had connections to both the club and the school.

Due to adverse weather conditions forcing the cancellation of the first leg, the cup will be decided over four games on Saturday, March 24 in what is expected to be a hotly contested morning of action.

The school and club have a long-standing connection and the trophy is named after Ken Cooper, who was a master at the Senior School for many years but also played for & was President of Colwyn Bay Rugby Club.

Last year’s event saw Rydal Penrhos turn in a stunning series of performances to come away with the cup for a third consecutive year after emerging victorious 6-2.

Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “The Cooper Cup is a tremendous showcase of the incredible rugby talent we have throughout the area, and it is going to be another fabulous event of that I am sure.

“We have a rich history of involvement with Colwyn Bay Rugby Club which stretches back decades, and events like this are a great way for each pupil taking part to sample a big-game atmosphere at a very early age.

“This is very significant in terms of their overall development, and those that come along to attend will be treated to a fantastic spectacle.”
