PRESTATYN Sports clinched the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division Two title despite suffering a 2-1 loss at Y Felinheli.

Mark Hughes and John Hargreaves’ side will be plying their trade in the third tier for the first time in their history after nearest challengers Bodedern Athletic were also beaten at Llannefydd.

Although they lost their undefeated league record with just two games to go, Sports’ sensational campaign that almost saw them thrown out of the division due to their ground location has ended with coveted silverware.

The away side began the game in stylish fashion and opened the scoring on 17 minutes when Tom Court rounded off a fine team move to finish well.

This provoked a strong response from the hosts, who responded well to the setback and levelled matters after 37 minutes when Griff John converted from the penalty spot.

After the break saw Sports miss a host of opportunities to regain their advantage, and they were made to pay for their inefficiency in front of goal on the hour mark when a prolonged period of possession presented an opportunity to Dylan Jones, who made no mistake to give the home side the lead for the first time.

Despite their best efforts, the visitors were unable to find a route back into the tie and saw their unbeaten record fall, but their misery proved to be short-lived as word reached the squad that Athletic can no longer catch them in the standings.

Captain Shane Middleman, said: After, a tough season, finally and deservedly we have been crowned champions. I am proud to captain this fantastic club and proud of every single member on and off the field.

“The players have given their all from day one and played some great football. Everyone has played their part in us winning the league, which you can see by all the hard work going on behind the scenes by the management and committee.”
