CONWY Mayor Collette Ryan visited the St Agnes Road Cemetery in Conwy on Saturday (April 9).

Councillor Ryan was joined by Deputy Mayor Councillor Joan Vaughan in the visit to the cemetery, where they were welcomed by volunteers from the ‘Friends of St Agnes Road Cemetery’, a community group dedicated to the upkeep of the cemetery grounds, which had previously become overgrown.

The site has undergone restoration since 2014, with Conwy Town Council helping with funding which enabled the Friends group to purchase a new bench and a storage container for equipment.

They were welcomed by the team of volunteers and provided with coffees and homemade cakes and shown around the area, which is now cleared of the bramble and undergrowth which covered most of the graves for many years.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor expressed their thanks to the team for their hard work and dedication, which has turned the overgrown cemetery into a green and pleasant space, where people can again come and visit their families' graves.

The St Agnes Road Cemetery was consecrated in 1863 after the St Mary’s Churchyard became too full to accommodate further burials.
