A NEW pétanque club has been established near Colwyn Bay, the first of its kind in North Wales.
A type of boules sport, pétanque was codified in the early 1900s in Provence, France, and is played by throwing steel balls (boules) of a tennis ball size at a small wooden ball known as a Coche or jack.
Known by many people who holiday in France, where it is widely played, it is increasing in popularity in South Wales and England - now it’s arrived in Llysfaen, close to Colwyn Bay.

A six-lane terrain has been built with free access to anyone at the Llysfaen Community and Recreation Association grounds, now home to Llysfaen Pétanque Club.
The club meets up every Sunday, with a club spokesperson adding: “Using a gravel playing surface means that it can be played all year round by all ages and abilities.
“Boules are supplied so come along and try it out.”
