THE Conwy Winterfest was cancelled for this year after adverse weather conditions scuppered its 2023 plans.

Organised by business owners in the town, the Winterfest typically features street entertainers, musicians, choirs, Clerical Error Morris Dancers, sword fighting, hot chestnuts and more.

Based on High Street and in the town centre, the festivities were due to get underway at 4pm on Saturday (December 9), before a torch-lit procession with armoured knights and their ladies at 5.45pm.

But earlier on Saturday, organisers confirmed that, due to poor weather, this year’s Winterfest would not go ahead.

A statement read: “We’ve been monitoring the weather forecast for the last few days due to the yellow warning in place, and hard decisions have had to be made.

“We have spoken with our health and safety advisor and the advice given is that, due to the weather, it would not be safe to proceed with this year’s event.

“Therefore Winterfest, including the torch parade, will not be going ahead.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and upset that this may cause. We are devastated to have to make this decision, but health and safety always have to come first.”

Typically during Winterfest, most of the shops and caterers stay open well into the evening, while the parade is led by a jester.

The parade proceeds through to the town square, while are also roast chestnuts and other suitable attractions.

Last year's parade, which had been organised by Conwy’s Chamber of Trade, saw more than 100 people battle freezing conditions to light torches for the procession through the town’s streets.

It had been held for 12 successive years prior to 2023.
