CONWY cyclist Chris Wilby is set to embark on an important journey that will involve him hand delivering an invitation from the mayor and Constable of Conwy to the mayor of Himeji City.

The invitation from cllr Evie Roberts to Hideyasu Kiyomoto is a result of the link between the castles; Conwy shares a twin castle relationship with Himeji where another breathtaking castle, of similar age, stands.

Chris's journey began when he noticed Japanese flags lining the streets of Conwy, sparking curiosity during his regular rides with the Rhos-On-Sea Cycle Club.

The connection led him to the realisation that he could be part of something special.

A spokesperson for Conwy Town Council said: "Known for his passion for cycling and exploration, Chris has undertaken gruelling rides across various parts of the world to immerse himself in diverse cultures and breathtaking scenery. His love for cycling blossomed from a daily seven-mile commute to work and culminated in challenging events like the renowned Paris Brest Paris in 1999.

"Over the years, Chris has completed numerous rides, including iconic routes like Boston Montreal Boston, Rocky Mountain Randonnée in Canada, and The Silk Route in Uzbekistan. Each ride presents a unique challenge, pushing Chris to ride against the clock while taking in the beauty of his surroundings.

"This year in April, Chris is participating in the Spring Brilliance 1200Km ride from Okayama, Japan, with a total altitude of 15,985m and a 90-hour time limit.

"Following his ride, Chris will journey to Himeji to present the mayor with the invitation letter from Conwy Town Council for a visit later in the year."

The invitation commemorates the five-year anniversary of the unique twinning of the two castles. This has enhanced cultural exchange and awareness and promoted tourism between the two towns.
