A “ROUND-up” exercise of the old Billie goats in Llandudno is to take place after a number of them died in April following a hit and run on the A470 road.

The RSPCA has revealed that, following a meeting on March 13, a routine round-up of the old Billies will occur later this year.

This will allow the group to assess the health and welfare of the goats and provide contraceptives where necessary.

Great Orme goat put down after being found injured by Llandudno road

A total of four of the goats were killed last month when they were hit by a vehicle on the A470 at Wormhout Way.

In February, meanwhile, another of the goats was believed to have been put down after being spotted injured at the side of Marine Drive.

The goats have roamed Llandudno and Craig-y-Don since the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns saw the animals venture from the Great Orme into the resort’s empty streets.

Janet Finch-Saunders, Aberconwy MS, said: “I am extremely grateful to the RSPCA, National Resource Wales, the National Trust, North Wales Police and Mostyn Estates for replying on this very pressing issue.

“As the Mostyn Estate points out, the goats are an intrinsic part of the Llandudno DNA.

“However, we must continue to work towards an effective, permanent solution that nurtures and preserves the harmony of goat and community.

“It is very kind of the RSPCA to suggest that I am invited along to future meetings relating to the Goat Management Plan and I will gladly take them up on that when I receive it.”

The goats on the Great Orme were originally a gift to Lord Mostyn from Queen Victoria and have roamed in a wild state for roughly 100 years.

In April 2023, it was revealed that the number of goats in Llandudno would be reduced by relocating some of the animals.

Mrs Finch-Saunders added: “There is definitely some positive news here.

“The animals will be rounded-up this year with the aim of administering the much needed contraception to keep the numbers within the agreed limits of between 100 and 160. Although, I suspect following a full round-up, this number may be higher.

“In the meantime, I thank those involved in the continued drama of the goats and look forward to working with everyone to ensure that incidents like the crash last month do not happen again.”
