IT TOOK three stewards and a rude woman for us to get our rightful seats for Elton John and his band.

I’ve never raved about karma, but if this woman hadn't tapped me angrily on the shoulder – “you’re in my seat” – then we wouldn’t have found our correct (and better) seats and would still be sat in L31 peering round the pillar in front of us, wondering if Rocket Man had arrived.

We arrived at Eirias Stadium, Colwyn Bay, at about 4pm and the space quickly filled up. Fans poured into the venue in their thousands wearing star shaped glasses, Elton masks and Welsh flags. Our original seats had been undercover but our new seats were in the sunshine and overlooked the stage and crowds.

At 6pm, the support act arrived on stage - Bright Light Bright Light - and quickly grabbed the attention of the crowd with their easy to listen to electronic pop.

The main man himself took the spotlight 45 minutes later. The star sported a purple glitter suit that shined turquoise in the light and the initials EJ were embellished on his back.

The show opened with a lengthy instrumental that showcased Sir Elton’s extraordinary talent on the piano.

During the night, Sir Elton sang a selection of hits and classic tracks from his incredible five-decade career such as Candle in the Wind, Your song, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Rocket Man, Holiday Inn, Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, I'm Still Standing and Crocodile Rock.

The 68-year-old was joined on stage by Nigel Olsson on drums, Davey Johnstone on guitar, Matt Bissonette on bass, John Mahon on percussion and Kim Bullard on keyboards.

Throughout the two-hour concert, it was evident how much passion and love Sir Elton had for his craft. He came across genuine and full of energy and his voice was as powerful as ever. After songs he would stand up, thump his chest, point at the crowd or wave. He was a true professional and it was mesmerising watching his fingers fly across the piano keys.

Addressing the crowd at the start of the show, he said: “Good evening Colwyn Bay, North Wales.”

He went on to joke: “It is pretty cold.”

This was Sir Elton’s first concert in North Wales. Elton and his band visited Colwyn Bay as part of his European tour.

Towards the end of the show the star took time to sign notepads, programmes and even blankets and thanked audiences for their support.

He said: “This is my 47th year of touring. It has been a wonderful journey. It wouldn’t have been the same without you there.

“You have given me so much love over the years.”
