Tributes have been paid to a dedicated and well respected Llandudno decorator.

David Hughes (pictured), known all over the town for his painting of hotels and guest houses, died peacefully at his home in Victoria Street on November 22 at the age of 72.

He leaves behind his partner Valerie Thomas, two sons, Martin and Michael, three grandchildren, James, Mollie and Chantelle, a brother, Victor and two sisters, Cat and Stella.

Michael Hughes, 48, spoke of his father’s love of his work and the many people who have come forward to express their condolences.

He said: “He took over my granddad's coal business, Owen Hughes and Son Coal Merchants, then in the late 80's he went into painting and decorating. He has painted most of the town over the years and was very well known.

"He loved to work and he was even working up to the day he died.

"We've had 50 or 60 cards, some of them posted but many of them were hand delivered.”

After completing a building apprenticeship, Mr Hughes joined his father in running the painting and decorating business, which he has now taken on.

He added: “My memories are working with my dad, I remember being on the coal and bringing the sacks back with him. When I joined him in the painting and decorating we did a lot of the hotels and guest houses in the town.

"I went to the bank to close his account and the lady there said he'd painted her house – It’s a small world, he's been everywhere.”

Mr Hughes’ funeral was held on Tuesday, December 6 at St Paul’s Church in Craig y Don.
