A Llandudno micro brewery is raising a glass after winning a contract to supply 20,000 pints of ale to a national retailer.

Great Orme Brewery – based in Builder Street and marking its 10th anniversary this year - will supply around 80 Co-Operative stores.

Jonathan Hughes, founder of Great Orme Brewery, who lives in Glan Conwy with his wife and two daughters, said: “This is very exciting news, we are delighted to be working with the Co-op.

“Its heritage, values and local, community-based approach is a great fit with our business and to reach more Welsh communities is a great opportunity - building awareness of our brand and opening up new markets for our business.

“It is good to get our product out across Wales and it’s the next step in our growth as we’re also looking at exporting from next year.

”It’s very early days yet but we had one export offer to Japan in the summer, we’ve got another we’re hoping will be developing for somewhere else next year.”

Great Orme Brewery is one of 11 new breweries to supply the Co-op and who will tap in to a deal to supply a shared 500,000 pints to the community retailer over the coming year.

Simon Dryell, ranging manager for the Co-op in Wales, said: “It’s exciting to collaborate with breweries such as the Great Orme Brewery. The quality, passion and innovation of small producers makes these prized local products and we are delighted to give them pride of place in our stores.”

The brewery, which also supplies Asda and Morrisons through a bottling agency, first started brewing ale at the family farm in Glan Conwy before moving to its present site in Llandudno, where it is run by a hard-working seven-strong team.

It will now supply three of its brews to the Co-op: Welsh Gold Pale Ale; Snowdon Craft Lager and Orme Bitter.
