Hospitality and Catering students at Coleg Llandrillo have been raising awareness of the global problem that is food waste.

For their first Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge on Global Citizenship, the level 1 group investigated and researched food waste, both within Wales and on an international scale. They looked at the economic, environmental and social impacts of the food that we waste at home on a daily basis, as well as the food wasted by the hospitality industry.

The students put together a variety of awareness-raising activities and set up a stall in the college’s main reception area in order to inform staff and students of the extent of the problem and how the problem can be reduced by our own food waste.

One of the students involved, Connor Davies-Whittaker from Rhyl, said: “It’s important that people realise how much food we waste.

“Other countries have strict laws on food waste and its usage, for example, Italian supermarkets donate waste to food charities.”

The students created a range of posters, leaflets and recipe books. They also gave out samples of dishes that can be made from food waste, from cakes to chicken stew and wrote a poem about food waste.
