Deganwy could be set to lose an important service in the coming months.

The Deganwy Post Office, on Station Road, will be closing on May 30 following the resignation of the postmaster and the current tennants not renewing the lease.

Current owners of the store Roeevna Silalahi and John McEwen have been in charge of the Post Office for five years and said they would be sad to leave.

Mrs Silalahi said: “We have enjoyed every bit of it. Deganwy residents are so friendly and so helpful. I have met a lot of people through this job.

“If someone does continue it on, it is a great community. I hope someone does apply because it is very important to the residents, it is a crucial service.”

Conwy County Borough Councillor for Deganwy, Julie Fallon, took to Facebook last week and said how disappointed she was to hear the news of the closure.

Cllr Fallon, in a post to Facebook, said: “Post Office’s are a real lifeline for communities and I will do all I can to work with the Post Office to keep a branch in Deganwy.”

Despite the current owners withdrawing from the premises the Post Office may still remain open if a willing owner is willing to apply and take over the business.

Post Office Ltd, in a letter, said: “The provision of a Post Office to our customers in the local community is important to us, and we will continue to work hard to restore services in the area as soon as possible.

“We would welcome any applications from potential retail partners interested in running Deganwy Post Office on our behalf.

“I would like assure you that we are currently investigating the options available which will enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community.”

Mrs Silalahi and Mr McEwen said they would like to thank all the residents and customers for their support over the five years and had thoroughly enjoyed their company.

She said even if they were having a tough day, customers would cheer them up, one resident even bringing Mrs Silalahi flowers to help make her feel better one day.

Anyone that is interested in taking on the running of the Post Office is asked to contact the Post Office Ltd recruitment team on 0845 601 6260.
