The worlds best cyclists raced into Colwyn Bay on Sunday concluding the OVO Energy Women's Tour.

This was the first time a stage in the internationally recognised event has been held in Wales and the Colwyn Bay Promenade was the backdrop for the conclusion of the tour.

Cervelo-Bigla Pro Cycling Team's Lotta Lepisto crossed the line first to take out Stage 5 while American rider Coryn Rivera was crowned the overall winner of the tour.

Colwyn Bay Mayor, councillor Stephen Williams, said it was a fantastic day and was thrilled to see so many people out cheering on the world best female cyclists.

Cllr Williams said: "I can't believe this has a global viewing and I am very happy Colwyn Bay was chosen to host such a big national event.

"The attendance was good, but could have been better. But all those that were lined up at the finish made a lot of noise to welcome home the cyclists."

He said this event, was one of many which showed Colwyn Bay was on the improve and residents had so much to look forward to.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Lord Elis-Thomas, who attended the stage finish in Porth Eirias on Sunday, said: “I’m delighted that we supported the race for the first time this year.

"As Britain’s only international level stage race for women, the event attracts the best female riders in the world – and is an excellent event to raise the profile of women’s sport, the sport of cycling and to encourage participation and healthy lifestyles.

"The route showcased Wales’ landscapes and highlighted some of our epic shores."

Residents took to social media following the event to show just how much they liked the event.

Phil Hw, on Facebook said: "Women’s Cycle Race finish at Colwyn Bay - a thrilling finish and great for our wonderful town. So exciting to watch."

Race partners Eisberg Alchol Free Wine said Colwyn Bay had been a great place to conclude the race.
